Scottish rope grown mussels are an excellent example of sustainable sourcing and have an extremely low carbon footprint. The young mussels (as free floating larvae or spat) settle naturally on the suspended ropes, and then grow by feeding on sea plankton and do not require any external feed sources (or indeed veterinary treatments). Scottish rope-grown mussels do not grow on the seabed and are not dredged for harvesting, which means they are full-bodied and grit-free.
WHY CHOOSE SCOTTISH MUSSELS?
Scottish mussels are carefully cultivated in the pristine seas off the Scottish west coast and Shetland. Grown on ropes suspended in the tidal currents, our delicious mussels are plump and sweet-tasting. They are amongst the most environmentally friendly farmed foods around!

The Food Standards Scotland (FSS) official control (OC) monitoring programmes monitor Scotland’s classified production areas for the presence of marine biotoxin producing phytoplankton in waters, marine biotoxins in shellfish flesh and also levels of E.coli in shellfish flesh.
All our farms are toxin tested and product only released when the tests are satisfactory. This means you and your customers can be sure that every mussel you buy from us is guaranteed to be safe*
*mussels should always be alive when cooked

Our mussel farms are independently certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) eco-label schemes for their sustainable and environmentally responsible manner of cultivation.
In fact in 2024, Scottish Shellfish won the coveted ‘Supplier of the Year Award’ at the MSC awards.
