Quality
The superb quality of the grit-free rope-grown mussel or the slowly grown Scottish oyster allows the product to speak for themselves.
Fashion
Consumption of mussels in the UK has risen sharply over the last five years as consumers become more aware of the excellence of the product. This awareness is due to more exposure of mussels on television cookery programmes and also probably due to people switching from meat products. Consumption of oysters is also rising but more slowly.
Seasonal product
Oysters are available all year in the UK as they do not spawn in the colder waters around the Scottish coast. Due to the strategic location of our member farms, we are also able to supply mussels all year round.
Advantage over competition
The main advantage of the rope-grown mussel is that they are totally free of any grit or pearls in the flesh as the shells are never in contact with the sea bed. The shells are thinner than dredged mussels and meat yields are normally better.
The superior quality of the rope-grown mussel is recognised by UK consumers and restaurateurs.
Scottish oysters are widely acknowledged to be of superb eating quality. It takes longer to grow oysters in Scotland than on the Continent due to the colder water temperatures and, as in any species that grows slowly, better quality results.
