Our Scottish mussels are unbelievably succulent
[Wednesday, October 14, 2009]
The Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group is keen to highlight to its retail customers and consumers that mussels are of superb quality at this time of year.
Scottish Shellfish is fortunate in being able to source high quality mussels all year round from its member farms because of their wide geographical spread from Argyll in the south to Shetland in the north.
But this time of year is traditionally recognised as when mussels come into season and Scottish Shellfish is predicting strong sales over the next few months.
It has been a busy year for Scottish Shellfish with sales of mussels up on the previous year despite the difficult economic climate.
Stephen Cameron, managing director, puts the rise in demand down to consumers becoming increasingly adventurous in their tastes and also because mussels represent a quality but value-for-money purchase.
“Mussels are incredibly versatile in the kitchen and are easy to cook, which appeals to many consumers,” he says. “They are also very healthy being low in calories and fat. They are excellent source of protein, vitamins and Omega-3 oils that help reduce the risk of heart disease and protect against certain forms of cancer.
“People are also attracted by the fact that Scottish mussels are sustainably farmed with virtually no environmental impact.”
This is why member farms of Scottish Shellfish are currently undergoing independent certification for the flagship Marine Stewardship Council and Friends of the Sea standards.
