Scottish Shellfish

Measan Na Mara Ltd

Occupying an isolated production site at Loch Moidart on the west coast, a nursery site at Avoch in the Moray Firth and a land-based hatchery at Drumnadrochit, Measan na Mara Ltd can be said to have cast its net wide in a desire to find the best way of producing native and Pacific oysters for the Scottish Shellfish Marketing Group Ltd.

Blueshell Mussels Ltd Oyster seed of both species are produced in a full recirculation hatchery at Drumnadrochit, using wild, Loch Moidart broodstock in the case of native oysters. Seed are transferred to an upwelling raft at Avoch for nursery treatment and taken to 10mm (Pacifics) and 10g (natives). A proportion of Pacifics are further transferred to an Adjustable Longline Production System at Loch Moidart for on-growing to market size, while natives at 10g are broadcast into a square kilometre section of Loch Moidart to reach market size.

Surplus seed are sold to on-growers as required.
